Imagine if you are getting a good night's sleep and at the same time, your crypto assets are doing great, you wake up on Monday and check your phone and just see red in despair as you scroll through your portfolio only to see <a href="https://www.lbank.com/price/hyperliquid" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Hyperliquid</a> down 15%. Your bags from Aptos are bleeding out! Your well thought out Ethena position has suddenly gone under water! What were you dreaming about? It wasn't anything illegal or scandalous. It was merely the fact that 657 million dollars' worth of locked tokens that have been locked up and stored away like they were behind a dam, were now released all at once and flowing into the marketplace. Your portfolio was downstream from all those tokens being released. That means this week is Token Unlock Week! If you are holding HYPE, ENA, and APT tokens, here's what to expect next.<h2>The Digital Dam is Breaking</h2>The locked tokens can be understood as a reservoir behind a dike that a developer builds to keep early investors, developers, and venture capitalists from flooding the market with their tokens immediately, thereby collapsing the token price. A locked token is a commitment to the project's future, as it is understood that the developers are looking to build a viable long-term investment, and therefore we won't be able to realize a return on investment tomorrow. Just as every dike has a schedule for its water flow to the other side of the dike, each locked token has a release schedule, so that once the project becomes established, then there will be access to the tokens that have been locked. Three major locked tokens are being released at the same time this week. The largest of the three is Hyperliquid which released $330 million worth of HYPE tokens on January 6. Next is Ethena with 42.9 million worth of ENA tokens on January 11th, and Aptos with<a href="https://www.ccn.com/analysis/crypto/aptos-apt-price-breaks-barrier-ahead-token-unlock/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> 116 million APT tokens</a>. This is what worries established crypto veterans about token releases, since they are familiar with the risks of allowing those in the community to access wealth beyond what they started with, as it can create significant selling pressure for tokens.<h2>Why This Feels Like Financial Whiplash</h2>We've got two people here who did everything right. Maria is the graphic designer who saved for three months to invest $35 into Hyperliquid because she supports the concept of decentralized trading. James is the college student who made money working over the summer and bought Aptos after reading that Aptos has developed some of the most advanced blockchain technology. Maria and James both did their research, understood the fundamentals, and invested prudently. They didn't invest based on memes or the desire to become wealthy quickly. Both Maria and James did not know about the vesting schedule. The vesting schedule is like a bomb that is ticking. A vesting schedule is the date/time specified in a code when a large portion of the cryptocurrency is released from the total supply (the contents of a bag of very large coins) to allow the creators of the cryptocurrency to sell it. Once that date arrives, the code executes the release. The code will execute the release regardless of what Maria or James thinks about it or whether or not they supported it.<h2>The Hyperliquid Tsunami</h2>Hyperliquid has commenced a monthly token release project, unlocking<a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/academy/article/hyperliquid-labs-12m-hype-token-unlock-january" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> 1.2 million HYPE tokens on the sixth of every month</a>. This month's release is currently worth $31.2 million at today's prices. Although this is exciting for users, it is actually a way to manipulate the markets by using psychological techniques against them. The majority of traders have already put their calendars for the 6th of each month to collect the new tokens, and they will all focus on selling their token positions before they hit the market, thus selling prematurely or "dumping", prior to the actual release of the newly issued tokens. It's similar to a stampede of people attempting to leave the building before a fire is reported (thus creating panic). The result of these actions is that as of today, the price of HYPE has dropped by 55% since its peak price of approximately $26 (USD) in September of 2017. The primary cause of this decline in value has been traders' beliefs the market was anticipating this action; basically the entire marketplace has been "dying of a thousand cuts." Each cut has been premeditated and planned, which explains the decline in HYPE's price.<h2>When Your Homework Doesn't Save You</h2>An extra layer of suffering from token unlocks, because they punish both people that know and don't know about them. For weeks Sarah has been researching the Synthetic Dollar Protocol and how it works, what the use case is, and from whom she buys ENA tokens for the freelance job that she has done, but there were many other things to consider for her investment. What I think she was unaware of was the<a href="https://www.cryptopolitan.com/hyperliquid-ethena-657m-token-unlock/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> 171.88 million token unlock</a> scheduled for this week — 2.37% of the total supply and will be added into circulation as if they were ghosts coming to life. The vesting calendar for ENA was publicly available, but it was so hard to read due to the many pages of legalese. <img src="https://jid.rerrkvifj.com/media/customer/creatorSystem/c9fac43b-5861-4b6e-9fb4-5d38a14d34be.png"><h2>The Aptos Pattern: When History Rhymes</h2> Aptos has a recurrent pattern when it comes to unlocking their tokens. The price of the Aptos Network Token (APT) tends to rise preceding, drastically fall at the time of an unlocking and then continue to decrease in value after an unlocking is completed, forming a distinct and predictable cycle. Due to the nature of how things work and what will happen, unlike Atrix project's Token Unlock, many Trader's may anticipate an increase in the price of APT prior to the unlock and allow for the price to increase through greed. This creates an illusion of collective intelligence, while in reality, it will eventually become obvious to most that 116 million dollars' worth of Aptos' tokens will now be available for purchase. A prime example is the individual most affected by this phenomenon was Marcus; he bought 12 dollars' worth of APT, saw the price rise to 15 dollars and assumed he was successful. Because he had "confidence that Aptos was a sound project," he did not regard warnings of the impending January unlock (that is, that a large volume of tokens would be released and available to the public) thereby ending up with (now) a total loss, as today a single Aptos token is worth 10 dollars. This case illustrates a key limitation in one's ability to understand that in the short-run Supply and Demand is the critical determiner of value and will prevail over All technical indicators, including those of the business (i.e. Companies that are perceived as providing value in terms of providing goods and/or services that have utility will produce superior returns on investment).<h2>January 2026: The Month of Reckoning</h2> The $657 million announced this week represents just the beginning of a series of releases over time that will culminate in January of 2025, the largest single month of "unlocking" value/wealth in history, with a total value of $7 billion. During week three, there will be an estimated<a href="https://cryptoslate.com/january-marks-7-billion-crypto-token-unlock-amid-market-uncertainty/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> $3.7 billion "unlocks" across multiple projects</a>, with Ondo Finance leading the pack at approximately 2.42 billion "unlocks." When is January? It is essentially the result of a number of projects having similar timing for project vesting, meaning all have one-year cliffs on projects resulting from investments made in late 2023 and quarterly "unlockings" on projects made and raised throughout 2022. All are aligning to create a significant influx of value, or money, entering today's ecosystem. <h2>What Actually Happens When Tokens Unlock</h2> In the mechanical context, the term "unlock" is more accurately characterized as a straightforward mechanism than a magical activity. In the absence of an "unlock" event, the tokens are still existing on-chain, secured by smart contracts, and the owners can view the presence of tokens and know that they are there, however they cannot transfer or sell them. This is similar to being able to see money in a bank, drawn by an unbreakable glass/plexiglass. When the "unlock" event occurs, the timer associated with the smart contract reaches zero, and therefore the glass has been shattered, resulting in the owner being able to use and transfer their tokens as they normally would. At that point, the market takes over control of those tokens. If many owners simultaneously decide to sell, the supply of tokens is extremely high compared to the demand, and therefore prices of those tokens drop. The speed at which the price of those tokens fall varies greatly between the study regarding the price drop due to large numbers of unwitnessed unlock occurrences, but has a potential price drop of 25% or greater. The greatest percentage price drop occurs primarily when people are vested with tokens that are received as a part of their original team allocation agreement. <h2>Your Survival Strategy</h2> As an owner of HYPE, ENA, or APT at the present, you will need to make some decisions based on your unlock calendar. Token unlock dates and times can be found on many different websites including Token Unlocks, so do your research to make sure you do not get hit with any nasty surprises. The recipient of an unlocked token plays a big role in determining what happens with that token. Many tokens are unlocked to people who have made huge amounts of money already, so those people can hold onto their unlocks for some time. Or early-stage investors may choose to sell off a large portion of their unlocked tokens because they want to return some money to their initial investors. Look for ways to mitigate the potential damage created by the tokens being unlocked. Some projects actively combat unlock pressure through the use of burning or buying back of tokens. Hyperliquid has<a href="https://ambcrypto.com/hyperliquid-can-912-mln-in-token-burns-help-hype-target-40/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> burned 37 million tokens</a> as a part of its buy-back program. While this will not eliminate the potential adverse effects of tokens being unlocked, it at least creates a buffer against the impact of unlocking on Hyperliquid's price movement. <img src="https://jid.rerrkvifj.com/media/customer/creatorSystem/d67e1ea6-783e-4ac8-aab1-36f30ca432cb.png"> You should ask yourself about how much faith you have in your belief. If you are very confident in a long-term vision for the project you are considering investing in then the drop in price will give you a good buying opportunity (assuming you buy during drops). If you purchased based on the chart only, then sell during the unlock week. Also, keep in mind, the market knows most times. When you find out about the unlock, thousands of professional traders have set themselves up for the unlock before you. Therefore, the price probably began dropping several weeks ago.<h2>The Cold Reality</h2>This week, 657 million dollars' worth of tokens that were locked up will become usable. People who have been looking at locked wealth will suddenly be able to sell it. Some will. Some will not. The way everyone acts together decides if your Monday morning feels like a victory lap or a punch in the gut. The dam is letting water out. Today, you can choose whether to go downstream or watch safely from the shore. Look at what you own. Know your schedules. Know what you have and why you have it. And don't forget: not knowing about crypto isn't good. It just costs a lot.
