DeFi yield generation has seen some changes over time. This isn't seen as an indication of market breakdown, but rather an acknowledgement of market structure shifting for the yield-generating protocols who are operating in 2026. The vast majority of lending protocols and all yield aggregators on chain operate at lower rates than US Treasury bonds which have been yielding greater than 4% for sedimented timeframes. When you compare on-chain to off-chain yield options, the ability to entice new users looking for native DeFi yield diminishes, but EtherFi was able to create over $6 billion TVL by being better than other yield-generating opportunities available. The $25 million announcement made by<a href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/etherfi-allocates-25m-to-plumes-nest-vault-powered-by-superstates-uscc-302719027.html" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> </a>Plume's Nest protocol on March 19 represents an understanding of what is required to continue working at a higher level than their current competitors and how they will achieve this through going off-chain is part of that commitment.<h2>What EtherFi Actually Is</h2>The Ethereum liquid restaking protocol EtherFi was founded to allow users who deposited ETH tokens in exchange for eETH tokens — which are a liquid representation of their staked position (in staked ETH) — to earn restaking rewards while also allowing them to have access to additional capital for use in DeFi activity. The original product was ultimately simple, effective, and functioned well. Based on the original single use case, EtherFi grew its total-value locked (TVL) to approximately $6 billion. But EtherFi has since grown beyond the single use case of resting ETH. In the middle of 2024 the company launched its credit card product line and expanded into cash accounts. In February 2026, EtherFi migrated its credit card program — which consisted of 70,000 active cards and approximately 300,000 total user accounts — from Scroll to Optimism's OP Mainnet via an enterprise partnership with OP Labs. As stated by CEO Mike Silagadze, EtherFi aims to establish a complete financial stack: salary deposits; savings accounts; yield generation; and everyday transactional spending — all using EtherFi's infrastructure and avoiding traditional banking systems for off-ramping. In order to achieve that goal the company will need yield sources beyond what can be generated through Ethereum based restaking alone. That is where the Plume allocation ties into the greater ambitions of the company.<h2>Plume's Nest and the nBASIS Vault</h2>In October 2025,<a href="https://www.tronweekly.com/etherfi-invests-25m-in-plume-to-boost-rwa-yield/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> </a>Plume Network<a href="https://www.tronweekly.com/etherfi-invests-25m-in-plume-to-boost-rwa-yield/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> </a>was recognized by the SEC as a transfer agent, which is the essential part of the story that the press won't disclose to the general public. With that said, this information is pertinent to both the capacity to support institutional investment strategies through an on-chain RWA platform with SEC transfer agent status, and for supporting compliance frameworks that require retail facing integrations. If Plume had not obtained that designation, the EtherFi integration would have encountered regulatory hurdles which would have made it too complex to distribute the product through its 300,000 user accounts legally. The initial product offering is the<a href="https://crypto-economy.com/etherfi-and-plume-launch-nest-vault-with-superstates-uscc/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> </a>nBASIS vault, powered by The USCC Crypto Carry Fund (managed by Superstate). The USCC generates yield from 3 different sources: crypto basis spreads (spot price versus futures price across Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and XRP), staking rewards on those same assets, and government securities yield. Therefore, not only do we have three unique sources of return, but there is no correlation between any of the three streams of return with traditional directional exposure to crypto (i.e., a user whose ETH position is down 30% still earns yield because of the discrepancy between Bitcoin's spot price and futures price). Therefore, the real distinction between the two payment structures is who manages the funds and their respective compensation structure. The architecture of Plume's framework is set up to handle all execution, reporting, compliance and risk controls through on-chain processes. Therefore, EtherFi doesn't need to build their own institutional desk in order to be able to launch this product. Plume has built the packaged product. EtherFi will handle distribution of the product. Superstate will manage the underlying fund. The initial allocation of $25,000,000 resides within this 3-way partnership.<h2>Phase Two and the $6 Billion Distribution Surface</h2>There will be two stages in the rollout process. The first stage involves EtherFi reallocating funds to the nBASIS vault, which will give institutions exposure to the protocol using its own balance sheet. The second stage involves the integration into EtherFi's user interface, where users can view a separate RWA vault built directly into EtherFi. In the original announcement by Plume co-founder Teddy Pornprinya, he stated that the distribution component was mentioned as the main area of focus because currently, RWA yield is only available to institutions or sophisticated investors through a separate platform requiring KYC, separate logins, and minimum investment requirements. However, by integrating this distribution mechanism into EtherFi's existing user interface with 300,000 users and spending 70,000 active cards, all of these friction points are eliminated. This way, when users are looking for yield from RWAs, they are not having to go to a new platform; rather, the yield is coming directly through EtherFi. There is currently<a href="https://www.idoslaunchpad.com/etherfi-allocates-25m-to-plume-to-bring-rwa-yield-onchain/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> </a>$6 billion in total user deposits within EtherFi, representing the total capital available for RWA yield distribution once we reach the end of phase two. If we assume a 1% allocation from these deposits into tokenized real-world assets ($60 million), then when we look at the very few crypto neobanks doing the same thing, the demand for RWA yield infrastructure grows tremendously.<h2>What This Signals About Where DeFi Is Going</h2>The EtherFi Plume yield distribution represents an inflection point for retail DeFi platforms and how they think about yield architecture. For example, Morpho Vaults already automatically allocate their assets to various DeFi lending markets. Additionally, Ondo's USDY currently runs through nine separate blockchains and generates treasury yields across those blockchains. Furthermore, MakerDAO generates approximately 80% of its overall protocol revenue from real world asset (RWAs) collateral originating from traditional sources. Therefore, the overall direction of the market appears to be aligned: crypto-native yield is the foundation and real world yield is on top of that foundation. The tokenized RWA market grew from $5.7 billion at the beginning of 2025 to over $27 billion by March 2026 for a cumulative growth rate of approximately 374% over a 15 month period. EtherFi is a very small percentage of the overall RWA tokenized asset market, but will be using its distribution of 300k user accounts to quickly establish a market presence.
