On February, 24, 2026; The <a href="https://blog.ethereum.org/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Ethereum Foundation </a>announced on both their X and <a href="https://blog.ethereum.org/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">blog accounts</a> that they will be actively engaged in the Ethereum network by taking part in the Network's staking activities at the level of a non-voting member in its consensus mechanism. This stake will consist of the majority of Treasury ETH (the balance of which is reflected in the Foundation's 2025 marks). The added participation will allow for a more active contribution from The Ethereum Foundation to the Ethereum ecosystem and enhanced ability to support on-chain yields through a new Treasury Policy established in 2025 which permits the direct utilization of significant amounts of Treasury assets for use as liquidity and for operational funding on the Network. As of October 1, 2019, Ethereum Foundation (EF) had created a total of 2016 ETH (around $3.9 million to $4 million determined by the average price of ETH as of October 1,2019). This means that on a scalable basis, the EF will deposit minimum of 70,000; the deposited ETH will represent a significant proportion of the total assets (approx. $136 million-$140 million) that the EF collectively has. All benefits generated by staking from this account will return to the EF's treasury and will be distributed across multiple activities, including supporting the Core EF<a href="https://ethereum.foundation/transparency" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> </a> in ways such as research and development of the protocols, grants to the community at large, and long-term sustainability programs for Ethereum (ETH). Vouch: A validator client that allows validator operators to use different client pairings with the beacon chain and execution layer for their validators (e.g., using minority clients such as Prysm, Lighthouse, or Nimbus in conjunction with Geth, Nethermind, or others). This feature allows validators to create configurable strategies that promote client diversity and reduce risks associated with dominant client implementations that may negatively impact the network’s ability to achieve liveness/finality. The architecture deploys the use of hosted infrastructure with self-managed hardware from multiple jurisdictions and with a focus on using minority clients in order to create the most diverse validator pool possible. This is consistent with ongoing discussions within the community about how to reduce staking power concentration and reliance on major clients or cloud service providers (e.g., AWS). The Ethereum Foundation demonstrates its commitment to decentralized technology through its use of open-source and non-custodial solutions while also holding a significant amount of treasury ETH, making it one of the top treasuries worldwide. Staking provides yields in ETH rather than just passively holding them. The current estimated yield on ETH (based on the average of the networks) is approximately 2.8%–3% annually; therefore, staking by the EF is likely to create millions of dollars in annual rewards to go toward protocol upgrades, research (e.g., quantum resistant, scaling), and supporting the ecosystem without the need to sell any ETH or rely on only donations. By putting a stake of approximately ~70,000 ETH into the network, the EF becomes a direct economic stakeholder in how the consensus is established. The EF can use its staked ETH to vote on protocol decisions through attestation and influence proposals. In addition to being an economic stakeholder in how the network operates, the EF can help support greater decentralized validator security by providing additional staking validators. The amount of approximately 70,000 ETH is far less than the total amount of across the Ethereum network (nearly 30 million ETH), however the symbolic value represented by the 70,000 ETH is of significant enough importance to indicate continued confidence in the long-term. Furthermore, this announcement comes at a time when there are ongoing conversations regarding client diversity, staking centralization risk and treasury management within this new proof-of-stake (PoS) ecosystem. The EF hopes to use open source tools/programs designed around open source principles to serve as an example to other large entities or individuals on how to approach staking.<h2>Looking Ahead</h2>Currently, the ETH that was initially deposited is in the activation queue, and eventually all validators will have come online as needed to have a full stacking great of 70k of ETH to create rewards (which will then compound back into the treasury) for furthering the overall ecosystem and its continued support. This represents the evolution of the Ethereum Foundation (EF) from a research-driven entity into one that is now an active participant in and a benefactor of the development of the network that they supported with their initial investment - this is indicative of how staking is evolving into a core economic primitive and the EF's new approach allows for yield generation, de-centralisation principles and funding for the mission in a self-sustaining way while also being transparent.
