BERACHAIN GOVERNANCE TOKEN (BGT) FAQ
What is Berachain and what makes it unique?
Berachain is an EVM-compatible Layer 1 blockchain focused on decentralized finance (DeFi). Its uniqueness stems from its innovative Proof-of-Liquidity (PoL) consensus mechanism. Unlike traditional Proof-of-Stake, PoL incentivizes users for providing liquidity to dApps, aligning economic incentives and fostering a liquid environment. It also features a distinctive tri-token system, enhancing its unique architecture for DeFi applications.
What is the Berachain tri-token model?
Berachain operates with three distinct native tokens: BERA: Used for gas fees and transactions; validators stake BERA to secure the network. BGT (Berachain Governance Token): A non-transferable governance token for securing the network via Proof-of-Liquidity and voting on proposals. HONEY: Berachain's native stablecoin, pegged to the US dollar, integrated throughout the ecosystem. Each token plays a crucial role in Berachain's economic and governance structure.
What is BGT and what is its primary utility?
BGT is the Berachain Governance Token, a soulbound (non-transferable) ERC20 token. Its main utilities include: Governance: BGT holders vote on proposals and can delegate voting power, influencing ecosystem decisions. Earning Rewards: Users "boost" validators with BGT to increase their block rewards, and BGT holders who boost validators also earn a share of Berachain core dApp fees (from BEX and HONEY Swap). Redemption for BERA: BGT can be burned 1:1 for BERA, but BERA cannot convert back to BGT.
How can one earn BGT? Can BGT be bought?
BGT cannot be bought on exchanges and is non-transferable. It can only be earned by actively participating in the Berachain ecosystem, primarily through its Proof-of-Liquidity mechanism. This involves providing liquidity to dApps with whitelisted Reward Vaults and then staking the LP tokens received into these vaults. Additionally, other productive activities within the ecosystem, such as borrowing HONEY or providing HONEY in specific vaults, can also yield BGT.
What is Proof-of-Liquidity (PoL)?
Proof-of-Liquidity (PoL) is Berachain's unique consensus mechanism designed to bootstrap liquidity and align economic incentives across the ecosystem. It rewards users for providing essential liquidity to various dApps. In return, validators direct BGT emissions to specific Reward Vaults, where users stake their liquidity provider tokens, thereby earning BGT and contributing to the network's security and vitality.
How do BGT holders contribute to network security and incentives?
BGT holders contribute significantly by delegating their BGT to validators. This delegation increases the validators' block rewards, thereby incentivizing them to secure the network effectively. In return for their participation, BGT holders who delegate their tokens also earn a share of protocol-provided incentives and a portion of the core dApp fees generated within the Berachain ecosystem, aligning their interests with the network's success.
