MULTICHAIN BRIDGED WAVAX (FANTOM) (WAVAX) FAQ
What happened to Multichain Bridged WAVAX on the Fantom network?
In July 2023, the Multichain bridge protocol suffered a security breach where assets were drained from its wallets. The collateral backing tokens like WAVAX on Fantom was lost, and the bridge was subsequently shut down. This left the tokens stranded on the Fantom network with no functional path to return to the Avalanche network.
Why is the value of this token different from the native Avalanche token?
This token is currently a distressed asset representing an IOU from a defunct bridge. Since the bridge is offline and the reserves are gone, it cannot be redeemed for native AVAX. Its value is no longer pegged to the actual price of Avalanche and instead reflects the market's low expectations for potential fund recovery.
Is there a legitimate arbitrage opportunity between Fantom and Avalanche?
No. While the token might appear cheaper on one network, you cannot bridge it to Avalanche to sell it at the native price. The bridge is non-functional, meaning assets cannot move between these chains. Any claims of arbitrage are typically part of a scheme to trick users into buying unbacked tokens.
Can I still swap or redeem these distressed assets?
Official redemption is impossible because the bridge is defunct. While some decentralized exchanges still allow swaps, liquidity is very low. Trading these tokens usually results in receiving only a small fraction of what the native asset would be worth, as there is no longer a 1:1 backing for these bridged versions.
What is the current status of legal recovery efforts?
The network foundation has pursued legal action against the bridge protocol, resulting in a winding-up order from the Singapore High Court. Liquidators have been appointed to identify and recover remaining assets, including frozen stablecoins. A formal claims process is expected to be announced once these assets are secured and ready for distribution.
How can I protect my wallet if I held these tokens?
Holders are advised to retain the tokens as proof of ownership for future recovery claims. However, it is essential to use security tools to revoke any unlimited spending approvals previously given to the bridge's smart contracts. For future transactions, always ensure you are using reputable and operational cross-chain protocols by verifying the contract addresses.
